Mold design and production

We design and manufacture molds for the production of products using technologies such as rotational molding, thermoforming, injection molding, and extrusion of plastics.

What types of molds and tooling do we produce?

We can manufacture molds for any plastic processing technology. Each time, we help choose the right material for the mold.

For rotational casting, we recommend making molds from aluminum or steel. For thermoforming, we suggest molds made of steel, aluminum, resin, or wood. And if you need a mold for injection or extrusion of plastics, we’ll most likely make a steel mold for you.

Efficiency

The efficiency of molds depends on the material they are made from. The number of cavities, i.e., how many parts we produce in one production cycle, also has a significant impact. Based on the requirements, we select the mold’s efficiency so that it can meet the monthly/annual demand for specific products. Higher desired efficiency increases the cost of mold production.

Modifications to molds

If needed, when there is a change in assumptions, it’s possible to make modifications to the produced mold. The cost of these changes can range from 5% to 30% of the mold’s value. We always analyze the new requirements presented and propose the most cost-effective solution.

In the case of injection molds, it’s easier and cheaper to thicken the wall than to thin it. For thermoforming and rotational casting, changing the wall thickness can be done without modifying the mold.

Lifespan of molds

The lifespan of molds depends on the material used. We usually select the material so that the mold can be used by us for a lifetime.

Renovation

For most of the molds we produce, we offer a lifetime warranty, so the renovation of molds is done at our expense. The key aspect is taking care of the mold and proper  maintenance.

The molds we make are a cost-effective investment because we perfectly tailor them to the technology and optimize for the size of the production series. With us, you can be sure that you are getting the most advantageous solution and investing exactly as much in the tooling as necessary.

We consider all important factors like the desired quality and texture of your products, and the industry standards you need to meet. We typically offer a few mold design options, explaining their pros and cons. In certain technologies, we suggest spreading out the tool’s cost over the production series, making it more affordable to start a specific production run. If needed, we can also conduct MES analysis or strength simulations for further optimization.

With Plastipol, you gain not only full control over the production process but also the assurance of a high, Polish standard of design and production.

We design the mold

Based on the client's documentation, we prepare the mold design. We verify the specifications and ensure that the project accurately reflects your expectations.

We prepare the material

We select and prepare the material for mold production according to the agreements with the client.

We start the production of the mold

Once the design and material are approved by the client, we execute the geometry on a CNC machine and initiate the mold production. If the material is soft or made from regranulate, we use calibrators to maintain the continuity of the geometry of the produced product.

What determines
the price of the mold?

The more complex the shape of the mold and the more cavities it must contain, the more expensive it is. The price of the mold is also influenced by the material it is made from — steel molds cost more than wooden molds.

The intended production technology also plays a role in determining the cost of the mold. For example, molds for thermoforming may cost from several hundred zlotys upwards, while the cost of molds for extruding plastics starts from tens of thousands of zlotys. More about the costs of designing and making molds can be found in the FAQ.

Frequently Asked Questions

The cost of the mold varies significantly depending on the chosen technology and project requirements. Typically, it is:

  • Injection molding – the cost of the mold typically ranges from several thousand to several tens of thousands of PLN. Sometimes, for complex molds with multiple cavities, it can be over a hundred thousand PLN. In some cases, instead of the entire mold, we can produce interchangeable inserts, and their cost ranges from several thousand to several tens of thousands of PLN.
  • Rotational molding – the cost of steel molds ranges from several thousand to several tens of thousands of PLN. The cost of aluminum molds is 30%-50% higher.
  • Thermoforming – the costs of wooden molds start from a few hundred zlotys. For steel molds, it is typically around a few thousand PLN. In the case of mass production of a large number of thin elements, molds can cost tens of thousands of PLN.
  • Extrusion – the cost of the mold typically ranges from several thousand to several tens of thousands of PLN. For significant production quantities, there is an option to amortize the mold cost within the price of the part.

To offer the most attractive mold prices, our calculations take into account the subsequent production on that mold in the PLASTIPOL facility. We do not create molds without the intention of future production.

In most cases, after the mold is produced, it becomes the property of the customer. However, for less expensive molds (cost below 10,000 PLN), to minimize the initial implementation cost, the tooling remains the property of PLASTIPOL.

The standard warranty on the mold is 2 years or 500,000 cycles. However, we often provide a lifetime warranty for production at the Plastipol facility.
